ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

ABS: Industrial-Grade Toughness & Superior Surface Versatility

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a versatile engineering thermoplastic celebrated for its exceptional balance of impact resistance and structural rigidity. At SRT Plastics, we supply ABS sheets in smooth, grained (pinseal), and high-gloss variants, including specialized Fire-Retardant (FR) and recycled grades.

As the industry standard for professional enclosures, housings, and panels, ABS maintains its mechanical integrity and stable surface finish even under significant stress. Whether you are engineering durable prototypes or mass-producing industrial components, our ABS range offers a cost-effective, high-strength solution with end-to-end support from material selection to precision CNC machining.

  • High Impact Strength & Rigid Security

High Impact Strength & Rigid Security

    • Heavy-Duty Protection: Superior toughness makes it the primary choice for protective enclosures, machinery housings, and structural covers.
    • Structural Stability: Maintains high rigidity and dimensional stability across a wide temperature range, ensuring parts perform reliably under mechanical load.
    • Low-Temperature Resilience: Exceptional resistance to cracking and shattering even in cold environments, outperforming standard polystyrene in rugged applications.
  • Exceptional Machinability & Surface Quality

    Exceptional Machinability & Surface Quality

    • Precision Fabrication: Renowned for excellent machinability; it can be drilled, sawed, and CNC routed with high precision and clean, burr-free edges.
    • Versatile Aesthetics: Available in smooth, grained, and high-gloss finishes, providing a professional, stable surface for visible panels and consumer-facing products.
    • Secondary Processing: The surface is ideal for bonding, painting, and electroplating, allowing for high-quality secondary finishing without material degradation.
  • Advanced Material Grades & Sustainability

    Advanced Material Grades & Sustainability

    • Safety Compliance: Available in specialized Fire-Retardant (FR) grades to meet strict regulatory requirements for electrical and automotive applications.
    • Eco-Conscious Solutions: We offer high-performance recycled ABS grades, allowing manufacturers to meet sustainability goals without compromising on industrial strength.
    • Vacuum Forming Excellence: Specifically optimized for deep-draw thermoforming, making it the preferred material for complex, large-scale industrial moldings.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) Material Selection and Compliance Standards

Performance Standards and Environmental Compliance

ABS is an engineering-grade thermoplastic recognized for its high-impact performance and reliability in technical assemblies. Information for all Plastic Classifications, Certificates and Standards is available for download in the following tab. Also see our informative page on plastic standards and certifications here.

Chemical Resistance Moderate (Resistant to diluted acids and alkalis; sensitive to aromatic hydrocarbons and esters)
Impact Strength Outstanding (High energy absorption; resistant to shattering under mechanical load)
Sustainability Certifications 100% Recyclable Polymer (Recycled R-ABS grades available to support UK Net Zero Goals)
Fire Safety Available in UL 94 HB and UL 94 V-0 (Fire Retardant) grades for electrical compliance.

Engineering and Material Selection Guide (Surface Finish & Special Grades)

Selecting the right ABS variant is critical for achieving the desired balance between aesthetics and industrial performance. Grained (Pinseal): The industry standard for heavy-duty covers and interiors; the texture hides scratches and fingerprints, making it ideal for high-use environments. High-Gloss & Smooth: Preferred for consumer-facing panels and automotive parts where a premium, paintable finish is required. Fire-Retardant (FR): Essential for electronic enclosures and transport applications where strict flammability standards apply. Thermal Note: ABS remains dimensionally stable up to 85–95°C (depending on grade), allowing for use in proximity to heat-generating components. See the full product range below for all available textures and thicknesses.

Application Focus Optimized for Automotive, electronic enclosures, tool cases, and industrial prototypes.
Thermal Limits Continuous service up to 80°C; heat deflection up to 95°C.
Surface Finish Smooth, Pinseal (Textured), High-Gloss, and Matte (Black, Grey, White, Cream).
Environmental Stability Excellent indoor durability; UV-stabilized or capped grades recommended for outdoor exposure.
Thickness Range Available from 1.5mm to 10.0mm for a wide variety of thermoforming and machining needs.
