PS (Polystyrene)

Polystyrene (PS): High-Clarity Glazing & Technical Insulation

Polystyrene (PS), specifically GPPS (General Purpose Polystyrene), is a highly rigid thermoplastic valued for its 90% light transmission and exceptional cost-efficiency. Serving as a lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass, it is the industry standard for picture framing, lighting diffusers, and retail displays. Beyond its optical brilliance, PS offers extraordinary dielectric strength and low moisture absorption, making it a reliable technical insulator for the electronics sector. At SRT Plastics, we provide precision-cut PS sheets that combine high surface hardness with dimensional stability for demanding indoor environments across Europe.

Polystyrene (PS) Material Highlights

Explore the mechanical and optical advantages that make General Purpose Polystyrene the industry standard for lightweight, cost-effective glazing and electrical components.
  • Optical Brilliance & Clarity

    • High Surface Hardness: The rigid molecular structure of PS ensures excellent stiffness and resistance to warping under standard loads.
    • Dimensional Integrity: Characterized by high stability, PS sheets maintain tight tolerances and precise shapes in diverse indoor environments.
    • Thermal Note: While designed for indoor use, the material remains stable under brief heat exposures up to 80°C, suitable for proximity to lighting elements.

Polystyrene (PS/GPPS) Material Selection and Compliance Standards

Performance Standards and Environmental Compliance

General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS) is recognized for its high rigidity and optical excellence, meeting essential safety and technical standards for indoor use. Also see our informative page on plastic standards and certifications here.

Chemical Resistance Limited (Resistant to salts and alkalis; sensitive to many organic solvents and oils)
Optical Transmission 90% (Comparable to high-quality glass)
Sustainability Certifications 100% Recyclable Polymer (Contributes to UK Net Zero waste reduction targets)
Safety Standards Compliant with standard fire safety regulations for interior glazing and food-contact safe grades available.

Engineering and Material Selection Guide (GPPS vs. Glass)

Polystyrene is often selected as a value-driven alternative to Acrylic or glass. Glazing & Framing: Due to its high surface hardness, it resists minor abrasions and maintains a glass-like appearance without the risk of shattering. Insulation: Its low moisture absorption and high dielectric constant make it the first choice for non-structural electrical spacers. Environmental Note: PS is strictly for indoor use as it lacks natural UV stabilizers and can yellow or become brittle if exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods. For outdoor transparency, consider Polycarbonate (PC). See the full product range below for technical specifications.

Application Focus Optimized for picture framing, light diffusers, point-of-sale displays, and electrical components.
Thermal Limits Continuous service up to 70°C; heat deflection point at 80°C.
Surface Finish High-gloss Clear, Patterned/Prismatic (for lighting), or Anti-Reflective.
Environmental Stability Excellent indoor durability; not recommended for outdoor exposure.
Thickness Range Available from 1.0mm to 5.0mm for lightweight framing and glazing.
